CRICKET SINGLES
CHAMPIONSHIPS
TO BEGIN IN 1997
Anaheim, CA: In recognition of the growing popularity of
the game of American Cricket, the AMERICAN DARTS ORGANIZATION has
announced plans to begin a yearly Cricket Singles Championship in
1997. Due to shifts in the tournament calendar, clubs will need to
choose their representatives for this event by February 9 under the
proposed plan. Complete details will appear in the 4th quarter Double
Eagle, due out in early December. Individual membrs as well as club
members will be eligible to compete; however, dues must be current
before a representative will be allowed to participate at the
regional level.
***
The 1997 ADO calendar will be ready for distribution from the
office shortly after Thanksgiving. Members are again reminded that
calendars are shipped upon receipt of 1997 dues. Listings on the
calendar do not automatically guarantee sanctioning. Tournament
committees must apply for sanctioning separately through their
Regional Directors and Area Managers. Once sanctioning is granted,
tournament committees are then eligible to purchase dartboards at
special prices by arrangement with ADO sponsor General Sportcraft.
Boards for sanctioned events can be ordered through Tom Howard at
North American Dart Supply (508) 384-4100. Those ordering must either
establish credit or pay in advance.
***
Points Plus members can now earn points for using ADO merchandise
and affinity programs as outlined in the Spring, 1996 Double Eagle.
These points include rewards for such things as placing a service
directory ad in the Double Eagle, purchasing ADO products, joining
Quest or Signature Dental, using Alamo Rent A Car or USA Hosts for
your personal travel or staying at a tournament hotel. Receipts are
required for all such credits. In addition, members of this frequent
player plan should also forward their 1997 membership information to
Sandi Cain to earn additional points. Membership information includes
such things as local association offices held and participation in
local qualifiers for ADO playoff. All Points Plus updates should be
mailed to Sandi Cain at POBox 694, Laguna Beach, CA 92652.

AUSTRALIA TAKES PACIFIC
CUP;
VERRIER SECURES ONLY U.S. MEDALS
CARTER INVITED TO EMBASSY
Anaheim, CA: Australia, acting as hosts of this year's
Pacific Cup, swept what may well be the final contesting of that
international event. The U.S. team of Vic Clegg, Bob Gargan, Marilyn
Popp and Lori Verrier placed a disappointing fourth, with Verrier
securing the only medals for the U.S. The team faced tough
competition from New Zealand, Canada and Malaysia as well as from the
Australians. Full results will be forthcoming at the end of the
month.
***
Roger Carter, this year's North American Open champion and
National Champion runner-up, was once again invited by the British
Darts Organisation to compete in the prestigious Embassy tournament
to take place in January in London. Carter earned his first
invitation to the Embassy last year by virtue of his bronze medal at
the World Cup in Switzerland. He is also a member of the U.S. team
that will compete in the Winmau World Masters in London in December.
His invitation means that the entire U.S. adult team traveling to the
Masters will be able to oompete in the Embassy qualifier through
which the last slots for that tournament are filled. Other Masters
team members are Tony Booth, Brian Dougherty, Lori Verrier and
National Champion Jim Widmayer. Also competing is Stacy Bromberg, by
virtue of her Canadian Open and North American Open wins and Julie
Nicoll by virtue of sponsor invitation.
***
The results of the 1996 ADO club survey are in, with some
surprising results. Among this year's statistics: half the ADO
members belong to clubs of 600 or more members, and 48% of the ADO
clubs have been in existence 10 or more years. Newsletters are now
published by 48% of the clubs, and 82% are now computerized. In 23%
of the clubs, sponsors do not pay a fee, while in 13%, members do not
pay dues. On the down side, however, only 20% indicate they have
youth members or divisions, and 77% of the officers are still
volunteers; 65% are elected officers and 66% serve one-year
terms.

ADO Masters Team
Announced
Anaheim, CA: Forty-seven players competed Friday in
the national finals for the 1996 Winmau World Masters competition
prior to the MidWest Masters Open in Council Bluffs, Iowa. When the
smoke cleared, five players (four men and one woman) were
London-bound this December. On the women's side, Lori Verrier of
Salem, Oregon emerged victorious, besting runner-up and doubles
partner Stacy Bromberg of Las Vegas, Nevada for the women's slot.
Bromberg, however, is invited to compete in the Masters by virtue of
her victories in the Canadian Open and the North American Open, and
will make the trip on her own. On the men's side, one verteran of the
1995 team and current North American Open champion Roger Carter of
Warner Robins, Georgia will again make the trip. He will be joined by
Jim Widmayer of Staten Island New York - the current National
Champion and runner-up at the North American Open - Brian Dougherty
of Ocala, FL and newcomer Tony Booth of Northbrook, Illinois.
Dougherty was recently featured in Bulls Eye News and ranks in the
top 10. Booth, a native of England, will make his first international
appearance for America. This team will be joined by National Youth
Champion Brian Watson. Julie Nicoll, of Clifton, New Jersey, will
participated by sponsor invitation.
***
National Youth Manager Kerry Buchan has announced that he received
notice of three new youth clubs in the northeast since his article
appeared in the last double Eagle. Other organizations with youth
programs or separate youth clubs are encouraged to contact him with
information about their programs.
***
The local playoff deadline for the Second Annual Mixed Triples
competition is October 13. Regional playoffs are scheduled to be held
November 15-17. Club/teams should contact their Regional Directors
for details and to let them know whether or not you will be sending a
Triples team to the Regional. Under new rules this year, no ADO
points will be awarded for the Triples to encourage grass roots
players to get involved in the Playoff Program.
***
ADO member clubs planning to host a tournament of $5,000 or more
in 1997 must have their forms to the ADO office on or before October
15 to guarantee inclusion in the 1997 Tournament Calendar. Contact a

NATIONALS
ADO FOUNDER WINS NEW NATIONAL
POSITION
Anaheim, CA: The AMERICAN DARTS ORGANIZATION has
announced that the National Finals for the 1996 Winmau World
Championships (Masters) will be held in conjunction with a new
tournament, the Midwest Open, in Council Bluffs Iowa on September 27.
The tournament, which will offer $8,300 in prize money, is a joint
effort of the Eastern Nebraska Dart Association and the Des Moines
Dart Association. Other sponsors are expected to join in the effort.
The tournament site will be the new Harvey's Casino. Council Bluffs
is about 15 miles from Omaha, Nebraska.
***
The National Youth Finals will have a new look this year in Las
Vegas. For one thing, there will be seven finalists, as Hawaii sends
its first representative, 17-year-old Nick Yuen of Mililani, to the
playoffs. Alaska and Hawaii serve as their own Areas for purposes of
youth playoffs. Alaska, which has sent representatives in the past,
will not have one this year. In addition, a female youth player,
16-year-old Kari Stevenson of Webster Groves, MO, will be included as
part of this elite group of darters for only the third time in the
history of the championship. A total of 94 youth participated in the
Area finals from which the seven national finalists were
selected.

Tom Fleetwood, founder and retired General Secretary and Executive
Director of the ADO, was elected president of The National Exchange
Club Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse at the group's
recent meeting in San Diego, CA. Fleetwood is the founder and serves
as director of Development for the Exchange Club Center for the
Prevention of Child Abuse of Downey, CA. He has spearheaded
fund-raising efforts for the prevention of child abuse for many years
in the dart community, with dart players donating generously to the
cause. Since its inception in 1979, the Foundation has established
nearly 80 centers across the U.S. and helped more than 81,000
children and 43,000 families.

ADO PREPARES FOR BUSY
SEASON
Anaheim, CA: The Board of Directors of the AMERICAN DARTS
ORGANIZATION will hold an abbreviated meeting on Thursday, August 15
from noon to 4pm at the Tropicana hotel. Due to time restraints, only
pressing items of business will be addressed. However, anyone with
urgent business to put before the board should relay that information
to an ADO officer prior to July 15. Items submitted at this time that
cannot be considered in August will be moved to the agenda for the
fall board meeting.
***
ADO Vice President Bob Ditzler will host an informal meeting for
Regional Directors during the North American Open on August 17 at
approximately 5:30pm. Those Regional Directors who plan to be in
attendance may contact Ditzler with any items they would like to
address at this meeting. The meeting location will be announced in
the hall and will be posted at the ADO booth at the tournament
facility. Regional Directors who cannot attend the NAODT may ask
someone to attend the meeting on their behalf for informational
purposes only.
***
Associations planning to host qualifiers for the ADO Masters
Playoffs must do so by July 21. Details are available from Regional
Directors. Regional playoffs will be held August 23-25. National
playoffs will be held in September; details will be announced in the
upcoming Double Eagle. Associations are encouraged to support this
event to make it a success and to give their members the opportunity
to compete for a trip to England.
The ADO Masters team consists of four men, one woman and our
National Youth Champion, who travel to England to compete in the
Winmau World Championships (Masters) in December. Successful team
members may also have the opportunity while in England to compete in
a qualifier for the prestigious Embassy tournament held in early
January. The winner of the North American Open is also invited to
compete in the Masters, but does not have expenses paid by the
ADO.

BROMBERG WINS CANADIAN
OPEN
Anaheim, CA: Stacy Bromberg, last year's runner-up in the
prestigious Winmau World Maters tournament held each year in London,
last week claimed the Canadian Open title, defeating fellow American
and 1995 World Cupper Sue Qualls in the final.
Both Bromberg and Qualls defeated top-ranked Canadians in the
semi-finals to earn the right to compete for the title. As a result
of her win, Bromberg will be invited to compete in the 1996 World
Masters.
The AMERICAN DARTS ORGANIZATION sends a team of four men, one
woman and one youth to the Masters who earn their berths by virtue of
playoff victories. Players otherwise invited do not have their
expenses covered by the ADO, but are considered representatives of
America in the competition. The deadline for association playoffs for
this year's Masters competiion is July 21. Regional playoffs are
scheduled for August 23-25. It is important that club representatives
notify Regional Directors of their intent to enter players in the
Masters competition by July 21 to enable the Regional Directors to
set up playoff venues in a timely fashion.
***
The AMERICAN DARTS ORGANIZATION took a major step toward
establishing a national youth program recently when it took part in
the national Boys & Girls Clubs of America expo in Las Vegas,
held in conjunction with a week-long Boys & Girls Club
convention. At the expo, the ADO presented information about youth
darts to leaders of Boys & Girls Clubs and encouraged them to add
youth darts to their recreation programs. This was the first venture
in what is hoped to be a long and profitable partnership with the
Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
***
Tournament players are advised to contact their Regional Directors
or Area Managers to verify the sanctioning status of any tournament
if they believe the sanctioning logo may have been used without
authorization. Though such usage is a violation of federal trademark
laws, violations must be brought to the attention of the ADO board
before action can be taken against the offending tournament
organizers.

PACIFIC CUP PLAYOFF WINNERS
HEADED TO AUSTRALIA
Fifty-two finalists competed for a berth on the 1996 Pacific Cup
IX team just prior to the Derby City Classic dart tournament in
Louisville, KY on May 10. After a day of intense competition, Vic
Clegg (California); Bob Gargon (Delaware); Marilyn Popp (Connecticut)
and Lori Verrier (Oregon) were named as team members. Verrier and
Popp have competed in Pacific Cup before - Verrier at Pacific Cup V
and Popp at Pacific Cup VIII - but will team for the first time for
international competition. Verrier also competed in World Cup X and
the Masters last year.
Clegg, long-known for his darting prowess in California, made the
Masters team in 1995 but was unable to attend. Don Carrico went in
his place. This will be Gargon's first international competition,
though he is a well-known darter on the east coast.
Alternates are Roger Carter (Georgia), who was a semi-finalist at
World Cup in 1995 and competed on the ADO Masters team; Nick Rivera
(Arizona), who was a member of the 1995 Masters team and women's
singles runner-up, and Sally Munson (Colorado), a frequent regional
finalist who hasn't yet broken the barrier into international
play.
Pacific Cup IX will take place in Brisbane, Australia October
3-5.

To avoid delivery delays of dart boards ordered from NADS for ADO
tournaments, orders should be placed approximately 30 days before the
dart booards are needed. Payment may be made by check, credit card,

ADO MEMBER NUMBERS CLIMB!
Anaheim, CA: The AMERICAN DARTS ORGANIZATION has announced
that 1996 membership already stands at 91% of the 1995 total early in
the second quarter of this year. The number of member clubs as of
mid-April stood at 271. The ADO had also welcomed 32 new clubs to its

year.

The Western Maryland Dart Association became the first club to
provide all its members the opportunity to become members of the
Points Plus Program. This association paid the Points Plus membership

(including membership bonus, points for serving as an officer and
playing in Pacific Cup qualifiers). Initial prizes to be offered

electronic dart board for the home and a seven-day vacation package
for two for only $200. The first Points Plus prize catalog will be
published in 1997.

announced that a record number of players participated in Regional
Playoffs to qualify a team for this fall's World Darts Federation

competitors included 279 men and 138 women, representing
approximately 4,000 players who competed at the local level.
The Pacific Cup team is made up of two men and two women who
compete in singles, mixed doubles, doubles and team events against
other Pacific Rim countries for the Pacific Cup title. The Pacific
Cup is contested in even-numbered years. America has claimed the Gold

Past American Gold Medalists include: Kathy Karpowich, Women's

1988; Sandy Reitan and Kathy Maloney, Women's Doubles 1992; and the

Paul Lim and Eva Grigsby (1990).
Gold Medal American teams have included: Andy Green, Wade McDonald,

CARTER WORLD-RANKED
Youth program expands
Anaheim, CA: The most recent WDF rankings show America's
Roger Carter ranked #36 in the world. Carter was a semi-finalist at
last year's World Cup X in Switzerland and participated by invitation
in the Embassy World Professional tournament in England in January of
this year.
In a move to strengthen the ADO Youth program, the AMERICAN DARTS
ORGANIZATION has begun a joint effort with the national headquarters
of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. As part of the cooperative
efforts, each Boys & Girls Club in the U.S. will receive
information about darts from the ADO and be encouraged to add darts
to their regular sports programs. In return, the ADO will provide
referrals to local darts organizations for Boys & Girls Clubs
interested in getting player assistance for their fledgling programs.
ADO member clubs wishing to use this tool to approach other youth
clubs in their areas may obtain a copy by calling National Youth
Director Kerry Buchan at (912) 351-0162.
In other youth action, the ADO Board of Directors voted in March to
ban smoking by participants during competition at all ADO youth
events.
East-West All-Star Regionals are scheduled for the first weekend in
June. The new Championship Point structure is expected to result in a
record turn-out for this popular portion of the ADO playoff program.
The new point structure awards points to the top 16 in any regional
playoff where at least that many participate. East-West All-Stars
will compete in Las Vegas this August in a new venue, the Tropicana
Hotel, which is the new site for the North American Open.
Anyone who moves during a calendar year after declaring a region of
residency for that year, should contact his/her Area Manager or the
ADO office regarding participation in regional competitions taking
place AFTER such a move during the year.

CHANGES TO MIXED TRIPLES &
WORLD CUP
Anaheim, CA: In response to player input, the AMERICAN
DARTS ORGANIZATION Board of Directors made revision to both the
Mixed Triples and World Cup programs at its spring meeting
March 8-10.
For the Mixed Triples program, the Board agreed to rescind its
decision to award ADO Championship Points for this event. This
decision was based on player response to last year's initial conduct
of the Mixed Triples event. It is hoped that this decision will
attract more grass roots members to the program.
During the last run for World Cup team status, many players
expressed frustration with the personal financial requirements
necessary to make the World Cup team. After studying the demographics
of $10,000+ tournaments for 1996, the board considered three
alternative methods for choosing a World Cup team. The result was
that, beginning this year, the World Cup team will be made up of the
players with the best 12 Championship Point performances during the
time period of August 1, 1996 through July 31, 1997. Should a tie
occur, succeeding performances will be evaluated until the tie is
broken or until tournament performances are exhausted. Should a tie
still exist at that point, the board of Directors would vote to break
the tie.
It is hoped that the new selection method will ease the financial
demands on those hoping to achieve a position on the World Cup team,
while still allowing players to choose the tournaments they wish to
attend in the process. The 1997 World Cup will be held in Perth,
Australia.
Clubs wishing to order dartboards for their sanctioned tournaments
through NADS, the distributor for Sportcraft, should allow a minimum
of 30 days before their tournaments to place the order. Orders can be
prepaid, shipped COD, or charged to Visa or Mastercard. Clubs wishing
to obtain credit may arrange that with the Credit Department at Sport
Craft prior to ordering boards in order to obtain Net 30 terms.

ADO ASSOCIATION REPS, POINTS
MEMBERS TO GET SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Anaheim, CA: AMERICAN DARTS ORGANIZATION association
representatives who served in that capacity for a full year during
1995 are eligible for a special recognition patch acknowledging their
volunteer commitment to the organization. Those who meet that
criteria should provide written verification of such service to their
Area Managers who will then obtain the awards for them.
Points Plus members who participated in local Pacific cup playoffs
are reminded to send a list of those who participated, signed by the
person who conducted the playoffs, to the Points Plus Program c/o
Sandi Cain at PO Box 694, Laguna Beach, CA 92652. Points Plus members
receive these "frequent player" points even if they didn't win a leg
in the Pacific Cup competition! Each Points Plus member will earn 20
points for participating in the program upon receipt of verification.
Participation in the upcoming All-Stars is worth 15 points to each
Points Plus member.
Playoff deadlines for the All-Stars are not far off. Association
playoffs for this popular ADO program must be completed by May 5.
Regionals are set for the weekend of June 7-8. All Regional winners
win a spot on the East-West All-Star team and a trip to Las Vegas in
August to participate in that competition, held just prior to the
North American Open. This year, the event will be held at a new site,
the Tropicana, for the first time. East-West participants also have
an opportunity to earn a spot in the National Championships based on
the point per dart averages scored during the East-West all-Star
Challenge.
Last year, 109 finalists took part in the East-West All-Stars, the
second highest turnout ever for that event. National team members
(the top six male point earners and top three female point earners
for 1995) are not eligible to compete in the All-Star regionals. They
are, however, awarded Championship Points to recognize their status
as the National Team in lieu of the chance to earn the points at the
East-West Regionals.

ADO RELEASES 1995 CLUB
DEMOGRAPHICS
Survey results from ADO clubs in 1995 show the continuing strength of
the midwest and east coast for dart clubs. Area V, which includes
much of the eastern seaboard, represented 23% of the total ADO clubs
during last year; Area IV, which strentches from Michigan to Florida
was home to 22% of the clubs.
Almost half the member clubs report membership figures between 51 and
400 members. Thirty-nine percent have been in existence 10 years or
less, illustrating the continuing expansion of the sport.
A surprising 23% of the ADO clubs charge no sponsorship fees; 85%,
however, do charge membership fees. Half the clubs reported having
club newsletters, an increase from previous years.
Factors that illustrate continuing problem areas for sports
organizations include:
-81% of the member clubs have volunteer officers
-68% elect officers, but 63% serve only one-year terms
These factors contribute to difficulty in keeping a smooth line of
communications open between grass roots players and the board of
directors.
On the plus side, however, 81% now say they use a computer for league
activities.
